My Story

Bob Champion was born in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England. At the height of his career as a jockey, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July 1979. He was treated with an orchidectomy and with the chemotherapeutic drugs bleomycin, vinblastine and cisplatin, and also had an exploratory operation to identify cancer in his lymph nodes.

His victory on Aldaniti was viewed by many as a great triumph, following his previous adversity.

Bob Champion Cancer Trust

The Bob Champion Cancer Trust was established in 1983. We support and raise funds for the Bob Champion Cancer Research Laboratory, which forms part of the largest male dedicated research facility in Europe, situated at the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, Surrey.

And for our research team at the Bob Champion Research and Education Building at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, Norfolk.

Testimonials

Fabulous stories and he really captures the excitement of National Hunt racing. Also fantastic to read about what this Grand National legend has been doing since the heady days of Aldaniti and 1981. Poignant references to his cancer battle and lovely snippets of the celebrity life. A great read. Thoroughly recommended.

What a fantastic book. If you knew me I am someone who never reads but when I knew bob champion was brining a book out I wanted to get it. It’s such an amazing book which I’ve not been able to put down. I remember watching bob champion win the grand national and have watched the film so many times but reading the book is a great read. My favourite chapter was the 1981 grand national and the chapter the almost impossible jump made me want to cry. Recommend to everyone to read this brilliant book
